Minister for Information visits flood hit areas

Death toll rises to 20 as rains continue to sweep Nellore, Kadapa and Chittoor districts

The Minister for Information Anam Ramanarayana Reddy visited the flood hit Naidupet, Sullurpet and Doravari Satram. The heavy rains that continued to batter Nellore, Kadapa and Chittoor districts claimed the lives of 20 by Tuesday. According sources, Nellore alone reported 14 deaths while seven persons drowned in bus tragedy in Kadapa.

Speaking to media, the Minister said that the loss due to the flash floods runs into crores of rupees. A preliminary estimate has said that Rs.100 crore would be required to repair the damaged tanks and irrigation systems in the region. More than 37,000 people have been shifted to the 110 relief and rehabilitation camps being setup in the region. Several areas in the region still remained cut off from the rest of the state due to heavy inflow of rain water. District Administration has pressed into service of the helicopters to drop the food packets and water packets.

According to weather forecast from the Meteorological Department, the low pressure over the west central Bay of Bengal and the south west parts still persists and under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places and heavy to very heavy rain is likely at one or two places over coastal districts in the next coming couple of days.
