15kgs of Tomatoes cost just Rs. 20
With the dramatic fall of the prices of Tomatoes, many farmers and merchants at the Palamaneru Market Yard are now considering sending tomatoes to Delhi markets in order to get better margins. Tomatoes at the Palamaneru Agricultural Market fell to a price as low as Rs. 20 for a basket of 15kgs.
In general conditions, the additional produce by the tomato farmers are generally sent to regions such as Chennai, Villupuram, Pondicherry and Kumbhakonam. However, with the prices in these regions too falling to a level of Rs. 1 per kilogram of tomatoes, the farmer community in the Palamaneru are hard hit. Palamaneru farmers have put in lots of hopes on tomato plantations this year. In fact, few tomato seeds were in extreme demand that tomato growers have to depend on private seed manufacturers to get quality seeds.
Agricultural Market estimates says that 17,000 boxes of tomatoes are being sent to the Delhi and surrounding markets on August 31.
